Environmental Policy

At Lower Norton Barns we endeavour to develop and manage the impact of our business on the environment in as sustainable a way as possible. We have joined the South Hams Green Tourism Business Scheme and won the bronze award.

We are committed to:

  • Good environmental practice in business activities, minimising harmful effects and maximising the beneficial influences on the environment;
  • Complying with environmental laws and fulfilling duty of care requirements for waste disposal;
  • We welcome support, participation and suggestions from our customers as to how we can improve our environmental policy and protect the environment.

The following are some of the measures we are implementing:

  • The establishment of a wildlife area incorporating a fenced pond;
  • Use of traditional methods in managing hedgerows and field boundaries;
  • Provision of visitor information leaflets and books on local walks, public transport, and wild life parks, fauna and flora indigenous to our cottages and coast and countryside events information;
  • Purchase of local products, supplies and produce when ever possible;
  • Monitoring of energy, waste and water consumption and making energy savings through insulation, use of energy efficient appliances/lighting, provision of showers and use of ‘hippo bags’ in cisterns;
  • Information on farmer’s market diary dates and South Hams Food & Drink Association producers, pubs, restaurants, hotels, speciality shops and farm shops;
  • Use of local labour, suppliers and environmentally friendly and traditional products wherever possible;
  • Promotion of support of local environmental organisations such as Devon Wildlife Trust, South Hams Green Lane project and the South Hams/Wildlife Trust ‘Life into Landscape’ programme.
